Beaches

There are many beaches in Neil Island to explore, the most popular ones being those that have been named after the mythological characters of the epic Ramayana. These are the RamNagar Beach, Laxmanpur Beach, Sitapur Beach, and Bharatpur Beach. Each of these is amazingly beautiful giving a serene feeling to every visitor.

Howrah Bridge

One of the most famous places in Neil Island is the Howrah Bridge, which has two living natural corals formed like a bridge. It is a naturally formed bridge and one of the main attractions of the island. Stretching from the mainland to the shore, creating a wonderful arch with wild green vegetation growing on its surface, it is indeed a natural wonder! You can walk along the rocky shore to see the various coral formations, tide pools, and diverse marine life including star fish, crabs, and octopus. However, you need to wear perfect foot gear and walk carefully as it is a difficult walking spot. You must make it a point to visit the Howrah Bridge at sunrise. Also, make sure to visit this place only during low tides. There is also a Deal Coral Beach there that is suitable for trekking only, and not any water activities. You can also get your loved ones lots of souvenirs from this beach.

Festivities and events

You can also experience the unique festivities celebrated at the Neil Island by the native Bengalis; the most popular one being the Subhash Mela. The people there showcase their tradition and culture in a very delightful way through folk dances and music. Another popular event is the Island Tourism Festival, which is celebrated for ten consecutive days by the locals. The event showcases music, dancing, drama, arts and crafts, and exhibitions. Other festivities include magic shows and puppet shows for children. While the Subhash Mela is held in January for a week, the Island Tourism Festival is held at the start of winter. So, if you are visiting Andaman during those times, make sure to visit these events.

Activities

You can also indulge in various water activities like swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, boating, skiing, banana rides, fishing, and more while you are here. Or, you can also rent a cycle and go cycling to experience the small but beautiful island on your own. Neil Island also provides amazing opportunities for forest trekking.

So, whenever you plan to visit Andaman, don't forget to book a ferry to Neil Island, and explore these amazing beaches and wonders.

If you are not a swimmer, yet want to experience scuba diving, well done! Because not many have the courage to do so. But, to encourage such people, Andaman has several centers that offer PADI certificates and plenty of diving sites that are safe for beginners. Other than the normal scuba diving activities at the island, there are two other special scuba diving experiences you can explore if you are looking for more thrill and excitement. These are deep diving and night diving.

Deep diving – Although scuba diving in itself is deep down the waters, but it is generally limited to 20-25 meters from the water surface. Deep diving goes beyond 30 meters from the surface to help divers explore deeper marine life and coral reefs along with long lost parts of sunken wrecks. If this is what you want to experience, you need to go to Havelock Island, Neil Island, or Wandoor.

Night diving – Scuba diving is generally done during early mornings when the sun shines brightly. But, a once-in-a-lifetime experience is the night diving opportunity you can get at Andaman! Valcon in Andaman

Barren Island – active volcano

The only one active volcano in South Asia, along with the chain of volcanoes from Sumatra to Myanmar, is the one at Barren Island, located on an oceanic crust that is more than 100 million years old. Its first eruption was recorded in 1787, after which it erupted multiple times, with the most recent one being in February 2017. As the name ‘Barren’ suggests, there is no human population, and hardly any vegetation on the island. But yes, there are a few birds, bats, goats, and rodents that survive here. However, you can always have the best scuba diving experience in the waters around Barren Island.

Narcondam Island – Dorman volcano

The Narcondam Island was formed from a volcano that was last active in 2005. Today, the island is a wildlife sanctuary and is notified as a protected reserve. It is home to the Narcondam Hornbill, Narcondam small flying fox, and many other birds and animals. You can go diving and fishing in the sea around this island. However, only experienced scuba divers are recommended to go scuba diving here because of the rocky ridges and steep slopes.

Diglipur – mud volcanoes

Diglipur is around 300 km north of Port Blair, where you can reach by road or water, after which you will have to walk about an hour through the dense rainforest towards Shyam Nagar, to catch the first glimpse of a mud volcano. You can observe many mud volcanoes in the area in the radius of a few kilometers. But, do you know what a mud volcano is? Don't expect a real adventurous volcano here. All you will be able to see is a pile of mud and a few bubbles, but definitely, you would be amazed to see how mud bubbles out and creates its path around the forest.

Baratang – mud volcano

When you visit the Limestone Caves at Baratang, don't leave the place without visiting the mud volcano, as it is only a short trek from there. The main area around the volcano is moist with recently spewed mud and is enclosed with a bamboo fence. Another interesting thing you can see here is coconut vendors selling tender coconut water from coconuts bigger than the size of footballs!

Should You Opt For Reaching Andaman By Ship?

If Andaman is on your list for your next trip, one concern would be about how you would reach there. Because it is an archipelago that is situated a little far from India, there are two ways you could reach – by flight or by ship. Generally, people prefer travelling to Andaman by ship as they feel it to be a once-in-a-lifetime memorable experience. Travelling by flight is a very common practice which one can use while travelling anywhere across the globe. But, travelling by sea is not something that everyone gets a chance to experience. So, if you want to explore the unique experience of the sea, then this should be your chance! However, let us first look at all the pros and cons that one can experience while travelling by sea. And, for the rest of your trip and Travels in Andaman, you could approach Andaman Holiday Packages to arrange for the best tour for your – may it be a honeymoon tour, adventure tour, or business tour.

The ships are not cruises; but cargos
Remember that if you are choosing to opt for travelling by sea, you won't be transported in any cruise that you may be dreaming of. Although the ships are named as cruises, but in reality, they are government operated cargo ships that transport utilities to Andaman from the mainland. This means that these ships are mainly used for commercial usage, which is why you shouldn’t expect them to offer the luxuries you may be thinking of. However, despite of the absence of luxuries, the ship could bring you a unique experience.

Ships take days to reach Andaman
Both flights and ships to Andaman are available only from selected cities like Chennai, Kolkata, and Vishakhapatnam, the time they take to reach the island are different. While flights take only 2-3 hours to reach the destination, ships take 3-4 days! So, a ship is preferred only if you have enough days to spend for your vacation. If you are limited to only 4-5 days for your trip, skip this option and book a flight.

Ships do not offer private rooms
Since ships take a few days to reach the island, you will have to book a room to spend your nights. However, you can have no option of booking a private room. There are various rooms available on sharing basis, where you will have to share your room with other travelers on the ship; thus expecting no privacy. This becomes a nightmare for those on a honeymoon. However, there is a twin room sharing option, where a room is shared by two travelers. If you are a couple who want some privacy, you can opt for this room, but keeping in mind that it can be very expensive! And, if you are a family or group of friends, you will have to book a bunk class, sharing room of six, or sharing room of four.

Ships are lesser expensive than flights
Obviously, because flights take only a few hours to reach Andaman, they are much more expensive than ships who take days. So, if you want to save on your bookings, choose the option to travel by sea. However, the rooms you book can impact your budget. Also, ship bookings are exclusive of meals. So, if you are travelling to Andaman by sea, you will have to pay extra for 3-4 day meals. All of this combined could make your cruise journey fairly expensive, but again, it is going to be a lifetime experience!

Ships have limited seats and limited travelling dates
While you can easily book flights to Andaman because of the larger number of seats available, and also the multiple running days in a week, the bookings are restricted when it comes to ships. Ships offer limited seats and travel only once or twice a week. Moreover, the tickets are made available only 15 days before the travel date, and that too only at counters or travel companies; not online.

Ships may get delayed due to unexpected weather conditions
Although any mode of transport can be delayed due to unexpected weather conditions, the probability of ship delay is higher. Any kind of negative weather forecasts can delay a ship by a few days. This means that you may have to find a place to live in the city that your ship is departing from, which not only means additional days to spend, but also additional expenses.

In spite of all the above issues, ships can offer a new experience for those who haven’t ever got the chance to do so. So, even if you may have to face hassles while booking your ship tickets or spend a little extra, your entire experience on the ship can be one you may cherish all your life. The enriching and peaceful sea travel with a view of the aquatic life, the starry nights, and the cool open deck definitely calls for a “Yes”.
